I had hit all scheduled runs and mileage in August until yesterday.  I got sick.  Crap.  Still not all the way back today but I did go to work.  I plan on running tomorrow and Saturday.  If I run a pair of 6s I'll still get my weekly mileage in.  I'll have to convince my wife that I'm completely better.  She's convinced that running will probably make me sick again.  I think it will do the opposite, but there will be no convincing her.  She's cute that way.

6 slow miles on the JRP at 2 in the after noon.  I was going to say six easy miles but I was wiped out by the end and the last two weren't exactly easy.  I'm not very good at running in the sun light.  It wasn't even that hot, 78 degrees or so.  It didn't help that I just finished eating 8 jumbo hot classic style buffalo wings from Wingers.  I kept having buffalo-burps.  I'm making this run sound worse than it actually was.

I was going to go to Wyoming but too many of us are sick and we don't want to get Grandma sick so we are staying home.  Bummer, I like running in Lander, and it would have been good to get out of town.

Oh, and one more thing.  Grasshoppers are gross, especially plagues of them.

Just finished 6 miles on the JRP.  Was going to run a little with the gang at 6 this morning but decided last night to go to 7 Peaks and a 6 mile run would just get in the way.  So I went out at 10 tonight and enjoyed a beautiful night.  I was running just north of willow park in a portion of the trail that is a tunnel of trees.  There is no light nearby and can be quite dark.  Tonight I was running right at the moon.  It was right in my field of vision and alarmingly bright.  It was like running on the street in the dark with a car coming straight at you.  The light blinds you so you can't even see the road, or in this case the trail.  I've never noticed the moon blinding me before.  Weird.

5 miles on the JRP.  Slow again, not in effort.  I think just a few extra miles a week is putting my body to work on endurance and taking it away from speed.  Or maybe I'm just getting old because my legs are a little tired.  Also my  Garmin ROBBED me.  I was at 8:33 pace on my 5th mile with 1/3 to go so I sped up to get under 8:30.  I'm sure I was at that pace and approaching the end.  I waited for my watch to beep but it didn't.  I passed the end of my run, kept running and looked at my watch.  It said I still had .04 miles to go and an average pace on that mile of 9:10!  I think my actual average pace for the entire run was around 8:55 or so.

1.5 mile warm up and .5 mile cool down.  4 1/2 mile repeats in between.  Times - 3:35, 3:32, 3:31, 3:35.  I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get those speeds based on my last 3 runs.  I also didn't want to get up or set my alarm last night.  I pushed through and I'm glad I didn't.  I still haven't missed any miles.  I missed a run last week but made up for it  on my next two runs.  This is good for me because I always blow off 2 or so runs a week.  But that is usually during high mileage weeks.  I'm trying to stick with it.

Wow, where did that come from?  9:20 warm up mile, 7:53, 7:53,  7:49 on miles 2, 3, and 4.  Those are three of the four fastest miles this year.  I felt good after the warm up mile and put it in cruise.  I was surprised when I found my pace under 8.  It felt like 8:30.  Last week what felt like 8:30 was actually 9:00.  I don't know what happened but I'll take it.  Average pace 8:13, 16 seconds per mile faster than my previous best back in July.

6 easy miles on the JRP.  The main street tunnel is flooded again!  There hasn't even been any rain!

Ran 4 at noon.  I'm not sure how hot it was but the sun was definitely out.  I run in the dark and the sun intimidates me.  I started out with a relaxed warm up mile planning on taking it easy for the next three as well.  So there I am shuffling along on mile 2 wallowing in self pity because the "hot" sun and noticed that I was barely breathing.  That didn't come out right.  I was running at such a wimpy speed that breath was barely more than a walk.  So I picked up the pace.  It wasn't very fast because my legs haven't run 14 miles in 3 days for a while and they were a little tired but it was more effort.  I still almost wimped out a few times, tempted to just shuffle along but I kept it up.  I found a guy to chase down as well and that helped.  Well, I put a crack in the "wimpy afraid of the sun" barrier and I'm pleased about it.  (and a little embarrassed that I'm pleased about being a wimp)  Avg 8:43

This is not a running related post.  My brother-in-law, who comes across as the opposite of articulate wrote this poem as a tribute to 9/11 on today's 10th anniversary.  (No one even knew he wrote poetry.  He works in a coal mine.)

 Tears in a Waterfall

Like the thin veil of innocence over our National eyes, twin giants fell for our witness of evil.

While we watched, paralyzed by distance, a city responded: a nation resolved. Regular people forced into extraordinary circumstances, emerge tragically heroic.

Thousands of lights forever extinguished, Nation and Family weep in quiet defiance.

Two beautiful cascading pools stand and bear witness to the tears of a National Family held forever, flowing in memorium.

Tears in a waterfall are forever our waterfall of tears.

5 miles on the JRP, several of those with RAD and Becca.  It was great having some company on my 5am run and actually seeing people other than the roller blade guy and the lady with the German Shepherd.  RAD and Becca chose this route out of convenience for Becca so she could get one last run in with RAD before her wedding; today.  Congratulations!  That's some dedication or nostalgia or some of both probably along with a little crazy.  Congratulations once again Becca.  Any way, 9:20 on the warm up mile, 8:20s with the girls and 8:10 solo on my last mile.  Average pace 8:40.

4 miles at 4:20am.  Bright and early.  Actually, that is a little misleading, it was dark and early.  I wanted to be at work by 6, so an extra early run for me.  Average pace 8:37.  I decided to treat the last half mile with the effort of a 1/2 mile repeat.  I laid down my fastest mile of the year at 7:41.  That's not fast for a lot of you but I can't remember the last time I ran a mile that fast.  I still don't have any endurance but I'm bumping up the miles a little each week so it will come.  It was fun.

1.5 mile warm up then 4 .5 mile repeats.  3:35, 3:30, 3:28, 3:32.  .5 mile cool down.  4:30am again.  I thought I would be useless yesterday after running at 4:20am yesterday but I felt good.  Work required another early start so therefore another early one.  I hope it doesn't catch up to me.

It's been a since December that I've ran at least 8 miles.  Took it easy, 9:30 pace.  It felt like a long run.  8 miles felt like a long run.  That sucks.

Work from home day so slept in a bit and ran at 7am.  It was nice to have some light AND cool temperatures.

Another surprise.  4 miles at 7:59 average, and this after a long run the day before!  Well 8 isn't very long but it felt like it all day yesterday.  I think the last time I had a run under an 8 minute pace was over 2 years ago.  I probably could have last year but I never ran short 4 milers.  I got 10 hours of sleep last night so maybe that's why I felt so good this morning.  Ran at 10:30 and the weather was cool, clear, and beautiful.  I layed down another best mile of the year at 7:38 on the last one.

Oh, I almost forgot.  Good luck to all you TOUers this morning!

4:20 start again this morning.  These crazy early runs are becoming a bad habit, (insert sarcasm here) I need to sleep in another 40 minutes.  I got out of be all right but I tried hard to talk myself out of this run for the next 20 minutes.  I didn't want to do it.  I got out and did it at a slow 9 minute pace and didn't ever really enjoy it.  It was a beautiful morning too.  48 degrees, bright moon overhead, clear skies.  The river was absolute glass reflecting lights from the other side.  I still wanted to be in bed.

Slept in and ran at 5:10 instead of 4:20.  1.5 mile warm up, 4 0.5 mile repeats and 0.5 cool down.  Repeat times:  3:31, 3:29, 3:53(the Garmin robbed me), 3:29.  I was running with the virtual partner and was a comfortable distance ahead of pace when I referred to my watch and was suddenly an insurmountable distance behind pace.  It must have robbed me of some distance because by effort that 3rd repeat was the fastest.  I wore a long sleeve shirt this morning and it felt great.  I love this weather, however, I don't like that it represents the impending winter.  I have never done a lot of winter running.  If I'm going to keep up these miles and increasing them little by little I'll need some more winter gear and fix my tread mill.

5 miles at 5am on the JRP.  I don't know the average pace because my Garmin hic-upped again.  Only this time it gave me distance instead of taking it away.  The first mile was a "faster than expected 9:10."  Foul play was confirmed when the Garmin read 2.58 at the normal 2.50 mile mark.  The last mile I was running at or around 8:00.  Suddenly the mile ended several hundred yards short and the mile time read 7:02.  No chance did I run it that fast.  I hope this thing gets better so I don't have to buy a new one.

On another note I actually saw runners this morning, two of them.  It was a little weird.

Rest day, no running.  Spin class, 1 hour swim, total body work out, p90x plyo, yoga, jujitsu, zumba, and sweatin' to the oldies.  I feel very rested.

9 miles on the JRP.  This was a lot easier than the 8 miler last week.  It felt good.  They are opening up the road going over the trail just south of the golf course tomorrow.  The trail doesn't seem to be ready though.  It was still blocked and not yet paved.  It doesn't look like it will be too long though.  I ran through it and it was nice and graded.  There was even a couple people fishing under the bridge.  They looked it but I don't think they were vagrants.

I missed my run on Saturday.  I've missed one other scheduled run the last two and a half months and that was because I was sick.  Went camping with my boys Friday night and I never sleep camping.  I had planned on running Saturday night but I just couldn't motivate myself to do it.  Missing one run is not a problem, but it usually leads to missing a lot of runs.  When training last year I probably missed 25% or more of my scheduled runs.  I don't want this one to turn into that.

Anyway, 4 miles this morning at 8:43 pace.  I was inconsistent.  Running at a good relaxed pace then shuffling.  Waking up and getting back up to speed then dropping off again.  I finally got into a groove the last mile or so at about an 8:15 pace.

1.5 mile warm up the 4 0.5 mile repeats, then 0.5 mile cool down.  Repeat times were 3:28, 3:27, 3:33, and 3:28.  The 3:33 included the tunnel under main street headed south.  I'm a hill wimp and pushing up that hill took some speed away for the rest of that half mile.

It was a beautiful clear morning in the high 40s.  No moon so there were lots of stars.  I saw a shooting star too.  It was a little cold for my sleeveless shirt.  It might be time to put that one away for the year.

5 miles on the JRP and it was very dark this morning.  When there is no moon and no clouds for the city lights to illuminate it gets pretty dark.  I hate running with a light but this morning it might have been a good idea.  My piece-of-crap Garmin had another hiccup.  Cruising along on the last mile at about 7:55 when the lap beep happened early.  My overall average pace, which should have been 8:25ish showed 8:03.  Mile 5 was 6:55 and the .16 it gave me as a gift was run at a 3:15 pace. Yah right.  Anyway, I figure I ran it around 42 minutes which comes out to 8:24 average pace.  Which I'm happy with because the Mizuno Wave Creations are my heaviest shoes.  I don't think I've ever ran faster than 8:30 in them.

10 miles this morning on the JRP.  Cool this morning.  Not much to tell; it was a nice run without any trouble.  My knee is a little sore but it was sore before the run and not related to it.  I'm keeping an eye on it.  I wish I was running St. George tomorrow.  Good luck to all those that are.  I can't wait to read your reports.
