The other two times I've run since the knee injury, there was no pain during the run at all, a lot of swelling afterward but no pain during.  Not this time, I had to limp through the first mile before things started to loosen/warm up, 10:45 first mile.  It felt good after that, 9:30.  I came back and iced it for 30 minutes which isn't normal for me.  I usually finish a run, shower, and get on with the day.  Is 30 minutes long enough?

Twenty degrees out this morning.  I don't have a lot of experience running in the cold.  I used to just bag it or run for a bit on a treadmill.  But twenty is nice.  Hat, gloves, pants, and a warm pullover is all I needed.

If you dress right, cold weather isn't too bad.

That dang knee! What are we going to do about it?!?

From Chad on Tue, Jan 04, 2011 at 14:17:53 from 168.177.153.5

I thought that 20 degrees was going to require and outer jacket, but I tried it without and was fine.

I don't know about my knee. It doesn't seem to be getting any better and is always sore in different places. I don't want to, but maybe I need to see a doctor about it, although I have no idea who or what type of doctor I should see. Physical therapist, orthopedic, sports medicine?

From Burt on Wed, Jan 05, 2011 at 16:22:45 from 206.19.214.144

Sports medicine. Any other doctor will tell you not to run on it.

From allie on Wed, Jan 05, 2011 at 21:31:54 from 174.23.238.75

i agree with burt -- sports medicine.

From RAD on Wed, Jan 05, 2011 at 22:14:57 from 67.172.229.125

I will put my vote in for a physical therapist. From my experience the sports med doc simply wanted to throw meds at me to help the inflammation and then gave me like 2 stretches. After that didn't work it was on to shots, shots and more shots. The PT give me the reason WHY it is happening, then stretches and exercises to strengthen the muscles that will help prevent the problem in the future. I'm more about prevention and long term than short term fixes. Maybe it was the doc I went to, but I will definitely stick with a PT!

From Chad on Thu, Jan 06, 2011 at 10:26:01 from 168.177.153.5

Thanks for the advice guys. I hope it doesn't come down to any of them. I have new insurance with a high deductible so I'm going to baby my knee for a week or two and see if it gets any better. If it doesn't there my be some damage and I'll have to see someone.

How is the knee doing?

From Chad on Tue, Jan 11, 2011 at 16:06:15 from 168.177.153.5

It is still swelling up each night. It feels best in the morning but by the end of the day I'm pretty stiff. I can walk on it and even run like you saw, but any stress from jumping, squatting, etc. just doesn't work. It won't take that kind of stress.

I have an appointment to see an orthopedist sports medicine doctor next Tuesday. I want to rule out any damage.

Had an appointment with an orthopedist for my knee this afternoon.  His best guess is a meniscus tear.  I have an MRI on Monday and another appointment on Wednesday when I'll know more.  It looks like it will have to be scoped.  Crap.

NO TEAR!!!  The MRI didn't show any damage to my knee at all.  There is still some fluid and swelling but it has gotten a lot better in the last few weeks.  I do have instruction to not run on it for the next 6 weeks.  Its going to be annoying not being able to run until then, but at least I don't have to have it scoped.

From Chad on Tue, Feb 01, 2011 at 17:03:11 from 168.177.153.5

Don't know. It just started hurting after playing basketball one morning. No specific event during the game that would indicate an injury. This was way back in mid December. I tried running on it a couple of times but it really swelled up so I went and saw a doc.

So, how's your foot?

From ryandla on Tue, Feb 01, 2011 at 17:46:38 from 66.29.163.1

right foot surgery was in October - still hurts pretty good. left foot surgery was december - 2 more weeks of the boot and then I return to normal shoes on both feet. I will start physical therapy later this month and hope to be running sometime maybe early May. Until then hopefully doing a lot of biking. Get that knee better - take care!

You know Kelli, I don't feel any better than I felt 3 weeks ago. Half way through this 6 weeks I thought there would be some progress. My knee still swells up at times and just doesn't want to hold me up when bent, like going up and down stairs.

It sounds like you're doing better though. 22 miles on Antelope Island sounds fun. I've always wanted to run out there.

I hope the doc gives you ok to run soon, just in time for good weather runnin'!

From Chad on Mon, Mar 07, 2011 at 11:03:03 from 168.177.153.5

Hi Smooth. I don't know what to think about my knee. I have an appointment with my orthopedist on Wednesday. It was 6 weeks ago that he told me not to do anything involving impact for 6 weeks. My knee is better than it was 6 weeks ago, but it isn't healed. I don't know how it will hold up on a run. I feel like I could put some miles on it, but I don't know how well it would recover. I hope I'll find out soon. I just don't want to make it worse.

As for xtraining? Nada. I like running and getting up for an early run is fun. I can't say the same thing for ellipticals, weights, pools, etc. Those feel like work to me so laziness takes over and I don't get up early for those. I need to, and my waist shows it. (10 lbs since Sept.)

Total Distance

Just got back from the Doc.  There is a small spot of "dead" bone on the the Fibula (smaller of the two bones in the lower leg, I think).  It isn't on the weight bearing portion at the top, it is on the back and only comes in contact with the upper portion of my knee when it's bent.  That's why it is so painful when I squat.  It was probably caused by an interruption in the blood supply to that spot.  It has improved over the last two months so there must be some circulation there.  When this happens to the bone on the weight bearing areas of the knee, sever arthritis occurs and they do knee replacements.  Nasty.  I'm not anywhere near that.  And because of where it's located, running may not affect it too much.  He said I could start out with a mile and see how my knee does over the next day or so.  Start off slow and easy.  I hope it goes well.

I'm screwed.  It started off a little uncomfortable, but you think its going to get better after you get warmed up.  Not so.  The more I ran the more I hurt.  After a few minutes, the impact of every step was just too much and I had to walk.  Maybe I need a whole year.  Or maybe never.  That's depressing.

From Chad on Thu, Apr 07, 2011 at 18:46:05 from 168.177.153.5

I don't know. I'm mostly pain free for everyday use. But anything with impact, including running obviously, starts off being painful and gets worse from there. I'm afraid to test it for fear of having a setback. I think it has improved a little over the last month, but it is very slow going. I just hope the healing doesn't plateau.

The knee has been feeling a little better and I thought I'd test it out.  I wanted to see how it initially responded then how it felt after things warmed up.  It didn't feel as well as I wanted it to.  I pretty much limped from about a third of a mile until I finished mile one.  After that I didn't necessarily limp but I still hurt and I couldn't decide how best to foot strike.  It was also hard to stay with a similar foot strike with right and left.

The good news is I was able to run through the pain which wasn't the case when I tried a month or two ago.  It's now Tuesday morning and I don't have any soreness or swelling so small slow runs probably won't damage it.  They may help.  This whole thing is a mystery.

Dang it. Let's get Scooby and the crew to solve this mystery. I remember when I did something to my knee in high school. I could barely walk on it. Then I was headed in to school that morning, limping along, and I didn't want anyone to pity me. So I tried walking normal and just biting the bullet with the pain. All of the sudden it wasn't hurting anymore. It was kind of weird.

From Chad on Wed, May 11, 2011 at 14:50:21 from 168.177.153.5

Burt - I know, crazy stuff. But it is better than a month ago. If it keeps getting better then eventually it will be healed, right? So do think there is a monster mask on my knee that someone from that Mystery Machine can just pull off?

Knee felt better than on Monday.  That was encouraging, although I took and ibuprofen 30 minutes before.  I hope it continues to heal.  Pace was slow.  I've been accumulating lead in my legs over the last 5 months.  It was hard to run these 3.  Weird.  I should have been cross training, but I don't really like it.

Lots of pelicans out this morning at the wetlands just up the street from my house.  It's fun to watch these birds fly.

I'm coaching my girl's softball team and it's taking up all my time.  Three games this week and trying to fit in all my work hours has been a challenge.  So now it's Friday and I haven't run for a week and a half.

This run went well.  All this time off has taken it's toll so I have no speed or stamina but I did finish with a 8:30 4th mile.  I was surprised.  My knee also felt good.  A little tender the first few minutes, but fine after that.  Certainly a lot better than the aches and pains I keep reading about from other bloggers.  I don't have any injury excuses.  I do plan on taking a little slow however.  When I've jumped right into more than 20 miles a week in the past I always develop some ailment or another so I'm going to take it slow.

I was going to run a 1/4 marathon thinking of all those running the Utah Valley today, but I didn't feel very good after 2 miles so I turned around.  I felt a little sick but things improved after that and I finished strong.  Not as fast as yesterday, but I didn't expect to because it has been a long time since I ran 2 days in a row.  Knee felt good again.  I have been taking an ibuprofen before each run so I'm sure that helps with knee pain during the run.  I'd like to wean myself off of that.  We'll see how it goes.

Great run that RAD put together.  I didn't go the whole 12 that they did.  My legs just won't take that many miles yet.  We ran right by my house so I just stopped there and picked up my car later.

Even the seven miles and change that I ran were the most I've ran this year.  It went pretty well.  We ran at about the pace I've been running the 4s so I started to get pretty wiped out.  It's 12 hours after the run now and my knee is pretty sore, but it's not swollen so that's good.  It'll feel better in a few days.  I will probably take Monday off and run 3 times again next week.  I think taking it slow is still the best thing for me.

Thanks Rachael for setting this up.  Running with friends is always so much fun.

Chad- Rachel's always fun to run with! Wish I could have been there. Stay smart with your knees, they'll thank you for it and you'll get stronger by not pushing the envelope & getting injured.

Most of all, make sure you enjoy the running you're doing. It's supposed to be fun :-)

Ouch.  Me knee didn't feel so good this morning, and the pain didn't go away after it warmed up.  I really don't think this has anything to do with the original injury.  I think that my knee is week from 5 months of atrophy.  The pain is on my patella and it's probably tendinitis, but I don't know much about these things.  I thought I was taking it easy, but apparently I wasn't taking it easy enough.  Maybe I'll test it again on Thursday and see how it feels.

Well, my knee hasn't been behaving. It just hasn't felt any better than on this run so I've put myself on the side-line until it comes back. I guess I started off with too much even though I thought I was taking in easy.

So now it is finally starting to feel better again. I'm going to run tonight or tomorrow morning and schedule 2 to 3 4 mile runs a week for about a month and I'll see where I'm at.

Felt better on this run than the one last Wednesday.  Knee felt better, pace felt better.  I was encouraged.  Of course I felt this way a month ago then started doing too much and set myself back 2 weeks.  I'm still going to run just 8 miles a week for a few more weeks then work up from there.  A month ago I was planning on running  a 1/2 this fall.  I don't think that is going to happen now.  I'll plan on a full next spring.

4 evening miles.  I never run in the evening but I trimmed the yard with the weed-eater so I figured since I needed a shower anyway I would just run instead of getting up early the next morning.  It was warm and muggy but at least the sun wasn't pounding down.  Also, first time in at least 7 months that I ran an average pace of less than 9.  Hoo-Ray.  Knee felt pretty good but it is still different than the other one.  Doesn't hurt, just different.  I'll run my 4th week of two fours next week and then start slowly adding miles.  I'm itching to run more than that, but I'm also scared so I'll stick with my extremely conservative schedule.

Anyway, the parade was fun.  Overcast the whole time which was nice.  I also found a sweet spot, in the first third of the parade right up front with close parking and arriving at 7am.  I'm keeping that spot secret.

My hubby actually opened all our blinds (you know all those windows...we do have the same room afterall) and 2 of the windows and we just enjoyed sleeping nearly under the stars! Only the dog was nervous and put up a fuss. I actually ended up kenneling her in a closet so she couldn't hear or see the weather and we could sleep. I was NOT letting her sleep in my bed :)

Me knee mostly feels fine when I run and when it doesn't it will go away when it warms up. I do feel it when I put weight on it in a bent position like climbing stairs, etc. I'm a little scared to stretch that quad because I don't want to bend that knee that much. It's frustrating but keeping the miles low and increasing nice and slow is working.

dragonfly kills = i used to commute from logan to slc for work, and i would smash a bunch of dragonflies in the willard bay area during late august. i was rather amused by how many i could pick up on my windshield with each trip, so i started keeping track of the kills. luckily for me (and the dragonflies), i stopped commuting after two months. :)

You'll just know when it's time... What is this? A vampire romance novel?

From Chad on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 15:17:32 from 168.177.153.27

I wonder if in the past I've mistakenly associated normal aches and pains with 500 mile shoes. I'm going to keep using these cautiously and see what happens.

And why would a vampire even need shoes?

From Burt on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 15:20:42 from 206.19.214.144

allie - will you please answer that?

From allie on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 15:34:54 from 161.38.218.168

you'll just know when it's time = your leg will break. that's when it's time (actually, a little bit before that).

i don't know what vampires are, so i can't answer any more questions at this time.

A thousand miles? Cool!

From Rob on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 16:54:20 from 206.71.84.68

Yep, plus 350 miles of elliptical miles while I was injured.

I would argue with Allie that minimalist shoes should get less miles, I would say that they just get more minimal.

I don't do it to prove a point or anything though. My wife just gets mad at me when I buy new shoes all the time.

Hey Scott, props to you and all those other 100 mile freaks out there (that's a compliment by the way). That's intense and more than a little terrifying and I'm not even running it.

Rob, I'm glad to see you can put that many miles on a pair of shoes. I hate throwing 100 bones on a pair of shoes that last 3 months.

4 easy miles.  It took forever to get warmed up.  My first mile was 10:07 and even the first half of the second mile was slow.  On top of that I almost went back to bed.  I had this run and one more to get in this week so "I could just run Friday and Saturday" I told myself.  After going back to bed one day it gets easier to go back to sleep on the next so I dragged myself out.  Average pace 8:57.

The tunnel under main street on the JRP is open!  It is a little gross.  It looked like a light brown landscape fabric was draped over the rock retaining wall.  It was actually a big wall of gross algae.  I almost threw up in my mouth.

I slept through yesterday's run.  The alarm went off and I turned it off.  Laid there for a bit having it in the back of my mind that I needed to get up.  Finally got up and noticed that 15 minutes had past.  Pretty good, I wasn't that late.  I looked again and it 1 Hour and 15 minutes.  Crap.

So this morning I had 2 days rest and it showed.  I had a good quick run at 8:30 average pace.  Only 1 second off my year's best.  However, I did have my fastest mile split on mile five.  7:52.  Little by little it's coming back.

I also had the opportunity to clear out some spider webs on the JRP this morning, so that was nice.

Rachael, you're full of it. These are your average half mile splits for your desnews 10k.

3:36, 3:36, 3:28, 3:28, 3:43, 3:43, 3:38, 3:38, 3:42, 3:42, 3:55, 3:55, 3:49.

And those don't have breaks in between them like mine do. You can't fool me. You can hit 800s like that with your eyes closed.

From RAD on Tue, Aug 30, 2011 at 23:01:36 from 76.27.16.189

okay, but here is my reasoning on those - First, only one mile is faster than your 800 splits AND this was a downhill course, not flat. When I go to a track I have a hard time doing speed work and hitting 3:30's for 800's. I wish it was easier, I would then have more confidence about trying for a 3:30-3:35 at SGM. If Bart Yasso's prediction holds true I'll be closer to a 3:45.

6 slow miles on the JRP at 2 in the after noon.  I was going to say six easy miles but I was wiped out by the end and the last two weren't exactly easy.  I'm not very good at running in the sun light.  It wasn't even that hot, 78 degrees or so.  It didn't help that I just finished eating 8 jumbo hot classic style buffalo wings from Wingers.  I kept having buffalo-burps.  I'm making this run sound worse than it actually was.

I was going to go to Wyoming but too many of us are sick and we don't want to get Grandma sick so we are staying home.  Bummer, I like running in Lander, and it would have been good to get out of town.

Just finished 6 miles on the JRP.  Was going to run a little with the gang at 6 this morning but decided last night to go to 7 Peaks and a 6 mile run would just get in the way.  So I went out at 10 tonight and enjoyed a beautiful night.  I was running just north of willow park in a portion of the trail that is a tunnel of trees.  There is no light nearby and can be quite dark.  Tonight I was running right at the moon.  It was right in my field of vision and alarmingly bright.  It was like running on the street in the dark with a car coming straight at you.  The light blinds you so you can't even see the road, or in this case the trail.  I've never noticed the moon blinding me before.  Weird.

5 miles on the JRP.  Slow again, not in effort.  I think just a few extra miles a week is putting my body to work on endurance and taking it away from speed.  Or maybe I'm just getting old because my legs are a little tired.  Also my  Garmin ROBBED me.  I was at 8:33 pace on my 5th mile with 1/3 to go so I sped up to get under 8:30.  I'm sure I was at that pace and approaching the end.  I waited for my watch to beep but it didn't.  I passed the end of my run, kept running and looked at my watch.  It said I still had .04 miles to go and an average pace on that mile of 9:10!  I think my actual average pace for the entire run was around 8:55 or so.

Ran 4 at noon.  I'm not sure how hot it was but the sun was definitely out.  I run in the dark and the sun intimidates me.  I started out with a relaxed warm up mile planning on taking it easy for the next three as well.  So there I am shuffling along on mile 2 wallowing in self pity because the "hot" sun and noticed that I was barely breathing.  That didn't come out right.  I was running at such a wimpy speed that breath was barely more than a walk.  So I picked up the pace.  It wasn't very fast because my legs haven't run 14 miles in 3 days for a while and they were a little tired but it was more effort.  I still almost wimped out a few times, tempted to just shuffle along but I kept it up.  I found a guy to chase down as well and that helped.  Well, I put a crack in the "wimpy afraid of the sun" barrier and I'm pleased about it.  (and a little embarrassed that I'm pleased about being a wimp)  Avg 8:43

This is not a running related post.  My brother-in-law, who comes across as the opposite of articulate wrote this poem as a tribute to 9/11 on today's 10th anniversary.  (No one even knew he wrote poetry.  He works in a coal mine.)

 Tears in a Waterfall

Like the thin veil of innocence over our National eyes, twin giants fell for our witness of evil.

While we watched, paralyzed by distance, a city responded: a nation resolved. Regular people forced into extraordinary circumstances, emerge tragically heroic.

Thousands of lights forever extinguished, Nation and Family weep in quiet defiance.

Two beautiful cascading pools stand and bear witness to the tears of a National Family held forever, flowing in memorium.

Tears in a waterfall are forever our waterfall of tears.

5 miles at 5am on the JRP.  I don't know the average pace because my Garmin hic-upped again.  Only this time it gave me distance instead of taking it away.  The first mile was a "faster than expected 9:10."  Foul play was confirmed when the Garmin read 2.58 at the normal 2.50 mile mark.  The last mile I was running at or around 8:00.  Suddenly the mile ended several hundred yards short and the mile time read 7:02.  No chance did I run it that fast.  I hope this thing gets better so I don't have to buy a new one.

On another note I actually saw runners this morning, two of them.  It was a little weird.

I missed my run on Saturday.  I've missed one other scheduled run the last two and a half months and that was because I was sick.  Went camping with my boys Friday night and I never sleep camping.  I had planned on running Saturday night but I just couldn't motivate myself to do it.  Missing one run is not a problem, but it usually leads to missing a lot of runs.  When training last year I probably missed 25% or more of my scheduled runs.  I don't want this one to turn into that.

Anyway, 4 miles this morning at 8:43 pace.  I was inconsistent.  Running at a good relaxed pace then shuffling.  Waking up and getting back up to speed then dropping off again.  I finally got into a groove the last mile or so at about an 8:15 pace.

From Chad on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 11:21:25 from 168.177.153.27

I do have a question though. I had 27 miles planned for last week and 29 planned for this week, but now my previous 2 weeks have been 25 and 23. I'm worried that jumping from 25/23 up to 29 might be too much. My knee has been getting a lot better and is a lot stronger than a month ago but I don't want to set myself back. I've decided to bump my schedule back to 26 this week but I really want to run more. What do you, or anyone else, think? The rule of thumb is supposed to be 10% a week and I've already been a little more aggressive than that. An increase of 6 miles is way more than 10%. Or maybe I'm worried over nothing.

From RAD on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 12:59:31 from 76.27.16.189

Okay, I know I'm no expert here, but here is my 2 cents:

In the past it always seems like a run just a little too long (sorry, I know...always my fault!) pushes the knee to a point that you don't realize while running, but pay for afterward. I would keep the miles low. Make them quality miles and make them count. Then build back again. Those 2 miles may just cost you a month of training set-back. This is all simply based on the times I've set you back on running. So, I guess I'd error on the side of caution. You'd probably feel great for the run, but then pay for it the next day. If you don't have a build up point you're pushing to (a specific race or something) I'd keep it conservative and not push the extra miles. Not worth all the hard work you've put in so far.

From allie on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 13:08:11 from 24.10.191.18

i'm glad your knee is feeling healthy and strong -- you have been very diligent in taking care of it and building back your mileage base using caution and good sense.

as for the 10% 'rule of thumb' -- it's a guideline but not a strict rule. in general it's always good to be patient when you are building up your mileage, and the 10% rule ensures that you work up to it slowly. however, even using that as a guideline, it's always going to come down to how you feel. listen to what your body is telling you. sometimes it will tell you it can only handle a 5% increase, sometimes it will be fine for a 20-30% increase, and other times it will demand a cut back week. i think you would be fine jumping up to 29 this week, but it's all dependent on how you feel. just take extra care of your knee and don't worry if you have to back off of the planned 29. if you do hit 29 this week, i would maybe drop back to 25-27 the next week and then see if you can push 30 the week after that. just take it a day at a time...

From Chad on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 13:09:09 from 168.177.153.27

I want to run the Halloween Half. I haven't signed up yet but it's kind of the last run of the season. There should be enough time left if I put in all my miles. Also, I'm not putting those extra miles on the long run, just the other runs during the week. I'm not trying to make a case for a 29 mile week, just looking at it from the other side.

From RAD on Tue, Sep 27, 2011 at 13:15:37 from 76.27.16.189

5 miles on the JRP and it was very dark this morning.  When there is no moon and no clouds for the city lights to illuminate it gets pretty dark.  I hate running with a light but this morning it might have been a good idea.  My piece-of-crap Garmin had another hiccup.  Cruising along on the last mile at about 7:55 when the lap beep happened early.  My overall average pace, which should have been 8:25ish showed 8:03.  Mile 5 was 6:55 and the .16 it gave me as a gift was run at a 3:15 pace. Yah right.  Anyway, I figure I ran it around 42 minutes which comes out to 8:24 average pace.  Which I'm happy with because the Mizuno Wave Creations are my heaviest shoes.  I don't think I've ever ran faster than 8:30 in them.

5 miles on the JRP.  I didn't have any motivation today.  I didn't want to get up but I did.  I ran a slow 9:18.

I didn't run on Saturday again.  I've been needing a couple of dump truck loads of fill dirt for my yard but was putting in off.  I found out a few weeks ago that the vacant lot next to me was finally sold so I've been waiting for them to dig the foundation.  They started Friday night so Saturday I had an endless supply of free dirt.  My cross training on Saturday was what seemed a hundred or more wheelbarrows shoveled and full of dirt and now two days later I'm still pretty soar with more work ahead of me.  However, I didn't get to the point of puking or crying like many of you did on Saturday so even though I shoveled all day long I still had it pretty easy.

Nice job running even when it is hard and you don't want to. You are really sticking hard to your plan and running it well! Are you ready for the Halloween half? I think you should run with the 1:50 pace group :)

Big problem. I haven't ran since this one. I'm not going to sign up for the Halloween half. I bought some cold weather running gear instead. I don't know what happened. One day I slept in and then all of the sudden I didn't want to set the alarm and get up. You said you need more solo runs. I think I need more company. Maybe that would help keep me motivated. Isn't Kelli pacing that group? It sucks that I'll miss it but I just don't have the miles in yet.

I don't know what the lot number is next to me but the street is Jordan View. There are probably 4 or 5 other foundations recently dug. Constructions is going bonkers.

First run in 8 days.  I slept in one day and it suddenly turned into a week.  I wanted to run the Halloween half but now it is out of the question.  I was really pushing it before but I'm afraid now to put in the necessary miles to get ready without injuring myself.  I'm still cautions, perhaps overly so, but better safe than sorry.  So instead, I ordered some cold weather gear.  I think I'm going to go into work early every once in a while to mix in an afternoon run.  I also would like to mix in some company on occasion to keep me motivated.

Shopping is always a good way to prep for a run. You're smart being safe with the overtraining. Mornings & afternoon runs are both good, but cookie dough is my favorite "mix in."

From Chad on Wed, Oct 12, 2011 at 22:41:36 from 204.113.19.55

Cookie dough is awesome. You can mess up cookies, but you can't mess up cookie dough.

And the average person would think that running is inexpensive. Not true, I still need new gloves, shoes, and jacket.

Crap, I just wrote this and my connection dropped when I hit publish.  So here we go again.  5 miles at 8:25.  My legs felt heavy after my irresponsible week off but the pace didn't show it so that was good.  It was 38 degrees so I wore my pants.  Actually that wasn't the reason.  The laundry wasn't done and my shorts were dirty.  I can handle 38 degrees in shorts.  I did choose to wear a long sleeve shirt however.

I hate after dinner runs. I wanted to run before but there were too many errands I had to run. So it was an after dinner run, the kind where your dinner keeps reminding you, "Hey, I'm digestin' here." Meanwhile, all the jostling pushes the dinner up against the esophagus, always threatening to make an appearance.

5 miles at 8:38 pace. No chance at any sub-eights this morning. It just wasn't there. But I still felt good so all is well. Me knee pain was almost nonexistent this morning! It will be back. I still feel it going up and down stairs. I couldn't find my gloves and usual beanie this morning so my hands were a little cold for the first mile or so but 38 degrees won't cause any problems. Every time the kids do the laundry everything always ends up in the wrong place. Who knows then they'll turn up; the gear, not the kids. The kids haven't been misplaced. Yet.

5 enjoyable miles this morning.  I thought it was going to be cold and windy but it was warm and breezy instead.  In fact, it was warmer than it has been in a long time at 5am, 49 degrees.  Weird.  I don't remember the average for the first half because I reset and set a slow pace alert.  I've never run with one before.  I tried to set a fast alert too but they have to be like 90 seconds apart.  Oh well.  Anyway, I set the slow pace for a fairly relaxing 8:45.  I tried to run relaxed but it definitely didn't allow me to be complacent.  I don't quite get it though.  With a fair number of beeps reminding me that I needed to speed up my average pace was 8:07, no where near 8:45. I was trying to hit 8:30 but the beeping wouldn't let me.

I'm a pansy.  I watched the weather Monday night and got scared of the cold and decided to skip the run Tuesday morning.  It turns out that it wasn't as cold as it was supposed to be and I should have got up and run.  Well, I decided to get up Wednesday morning and check the temp.  This time it was cold, 19 degrees.  I went back to bed.  Wednesday night it was already 23 degrees when I went to bed so I skipped this morning as well.  I'm a little scared of 20 degree weather but I bet it I would hardly notice the cold after a mile or so.  I'm a chicken.

So, it was so nice today I left work early to get in a run.  I've felt really good on my recent runs and because I'm a pansy I've been getting plenty of rest between runs.  So I decided to run 7.  I haven't run that long very often this year but I felt really good.  I had my fast shoes on and put down a 8:09 average.  Cool.

I knew Ogden filled up fast but a week?  Crazy.  I missed it.  No biggie.  I was debating between Ogden and Utah Valley.  I guess the decision was made for me so I signed up.  I hope to run some long runs with some of you that are running Ogden.  I think that will get me some extra miles early that I always seem to be lacking in my marathon training.

Oh yeah, anyone running any Thanksgiving runs?  It sounds fun although I might not have time.  All of my relatives have other plans so we skipped a big day in the kitchen in favor of a reservation at Marie Calendars.  We were a little late getting a reservation so our time is 12:15, and with getting the kids ready and a 30-40 minutes drive to get there I don't think I'll have time.  So, never mind.

Lots of fun on a run with some great folk.  I know I'm going to forget some people but here goes.  RAD and QP put this together, two for one kind of thing.  allie, Kelli, and Smooth.  OK, now for the people I met for the first time.  Eric, his wife Catherine, Amy, Wendy, and Annette.

We ran the 5 or so miles south to inlet park then back.  I had promised my wife I'd be back by 11:30.  My house is about 300 yards from the trail so I stopped there and walked in the door at almost exactly 11:30.  My car was still parked up at the start so I showered, changed, and got a ride from my wife back to the start to pick up my car.  Again perfect timing because RAD and QP had a big spread of various goodies.  I brought my 4-year-old Paige with me and she joined in with the treats.  I think she had 4 cups of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream.

OK, that was the highlights.  Now for the boring parts, the run.  My distance ended up at exactly 8 miles.  (8 miles ending at exactly 11:30?  Weird.)  I felt a little sluggish for only 8 miles.  I was recovering from the Turkey Trot so that is to be expected.  I've been feeling the start of some shin splints so I'm taking Saturday off.  I'll stretch it out and be back at it on Monday.  Don't worry Rachael, I'm not injured.  This is just preventative maintenance and it feels the same now as it did at the end of last week.  The 30 miles I ran last week was a big jump.  I wanted to run 32 miles this week but I'm not disappointed with the 27.  I'm feeling good and I want it to stay that way.  Dang, this paragraph makes it sound worse than it is.

Actually Rachael, its probably good you setup this run. I was going to run 12 today and an extra day's rest will probably do me good. And quit with the doom and gloom.

Steam8 - It was tons of fun wasn't it. Its a good thing that we have someone as popular as Rachael to setup these fun runs.

Chad- Thanks for making it out for the donut run. It was nice visiting with you along the run. It's good that you didn't over-do it and that you made it home in time.

It most certainly was NOT fair that you had a shower and clean clothes on at the end. But Paige was cute enough that we'll let you get by with it this once!

BTW- someone did see that skunk I smelled on the trail. I can't remember who it was that saw the critter, but kudos to them! You'll have to take pix of the tree stumps when the beavers finally finish them off.

And Congrats on your great Turkey Trot run Thursday!!

7 mile progressive run.  I decided to do it while running mile 3.  I wanted to run one between 8:10 and 8:20, miles 4 and 5 were to be between 8:00 and 8:10, and miles 6 and 7 were to be between 7:50 and 8:00.  It worked out well.  Mile 6 goes under main street and I fell behind a little on the way of the hill and had to hustle to get 7:59.  I ran 7 a little faster than I needed at 7:48.  Overall pace was 8:09.  I don't know when it will happen but I want to average 7:30 so I can run 8 miles in one hour.  Just a goal I pulled out of the air and seems like it will be an accomplishment when I get there.

Rough run.  Yesterday's run must have taken a lot more out of me than I thought.  I ran hard but I didn't think I ran this hard.  Anyway, today's average pace was about 10:30.  I knew soon after I started that I wasn't going to run the 7 I had planned.  I decided to shoot for 6 but even that was too much and I took a shortcut home.  I hope runs like this build endurance because otherwise, what a waste.

Hey Bec, I was wondering the other day how Texas was treating you because I hadn't seen any blog entries from you. Crap, my RSS feed on your blog wasn't working. You've been putting in a bunch of miles. I've got it working now. And thanks for the encouragement, it was helpful today.

From Smooth on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 00:14:51 from 174.27.205.151

Hey Chad ~ You had an AWESOME progressive speedy run yesterday. Today's run is perfect for recovery. It is not wasted. Easy runs are so important to let the body process the hard workouts. That is how we improve...the hard/easy principle.

WAY to push through a run that feels hard! It comes in handy at the end of a marathon when you feel that fatigue but you know you have trained your body to keep going! GOOD JOB!!!!

From RAD on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 00:17:45 from 98.202.23.178

yes, Smooth is right. For recovery just sit back and relax in the run! Now you can remember what that last 5K of a marathon feels like - but there is no shortcut home :)

Smooth - I was actually thinking that same thing about the end of a marathon. Good advice, thanks.

RAD - There was nothing relaxing about this run. It just plain sucked. And just for the record, I took the shortcut because I've been worried about shin splints. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

QP - Thanks, that was quite insightful.

From RAD on Fri, Dec 02, 2011 at 12:17:58 from 98.202.23.178

Nice job outside! I think why you were slower today is why I can't run a decent pace outside. I just get sidetracked and relax whereas the TM doesn't allow it. I need to start running better outdoor paces. Enjoy Saturday! Looks like I'll be squeezing in 13 between about 5 different things.

From Chad on Fri, Dec 02, 2011 at 13:16:08 from 204.113.19.55

Those wicked winds didn't happen here in Lehi. Those were all 40 to 50 miles to the north. The wind I ran in was a barely noticeable breeze compared to the tree ripper they had up there. The downside to some whipped cream is there is no more thanksgiving pie left. It's a very sad day when the Thanksgiving pie runs out.

RAD, I think winter arrived this week. I don't know if the shorts will come out until February or March so treadmill weather has arrived. I should get my treadmill fixed so when I wimp out I can still run. But, I was running a lot on a treadmill several years ago and I found that I was getting faster on the treadmill and slower outside. I think there is more than just focus that causes slower outdoor paces when running exclusively on a treadmill. And I'm sure you'll fit in your 13. You always find time to run.

Nice run.  Went out around 3 in the afternoon in 30 something degrees and sun.  There was a bit of a north wind but overall very pleasant weather.  I went north on the JRP and took the old detour around the construction.  I missed the mud but the trail was still "closed" past the area of construction where the new bridge is.  For some reason the trail is really ripped up for a half mile or so north of that access point.  I wonder what happened.

Where was I?

Oh yeah, I thought that 8:50s would be a good pace to shoot for.  Pace isn't really import on a long run but 12 isn't all that long even if it is one of my longest of the year.  Anyway, I stuck each mile in the 8:50s except for 2 at the end when I bumped it up and put them in the 8:30s.  There was another mile, mile 4 or 5, where the Garmin hic-upped and robbed me of a tenth of a mile or so.  The pace was in the high eights at the begging of the mile and then suddenly in the 10s.  I need to replace this ancient Garmin eventually.  I put the .4 on at the end to make up for my shortcut on Tuesday so I ended up with 30 miles for the week.  Now I just have to double that weekly mileage to prepare for Utah Valley.

I think that portion of the trail got washed off into the river and perhaps the reason why they stopped the paving. Maybe they will need to *shore* up the shoreline before paving the rest!

Wow I just entered this report. Have you guys been waiting by your computers excited to read my next report? Cool.

The trail has been under almost constant construction for years. First there was main street then main street and pioneer crossing at the same time, then they opened main street but started 2100 north. Pioneer crossing was done soon after that and now the 2100 north road is done and the bridge is done but of course the most important part, the trail, has been neglected. I want trail construction that actually extends the trail, not interrupt it.

Nice run.  My legs didn't feel as fresh as last Monday so I didn't push it but I didn't slack either.  I put the pace at 8:20ish and kept it there, nice and steady.  It was a bit cold out, probably my coldest run this year, but not bad at all.  The worst part of a cold run is a cold face.  I took a mile or so for my face to warm up.  It took my hands about that long too with my thin glove.  After 4 miles my hands were too warm so I took my gloves off.  That didn't last long, the sun had set and the temperature dropped.  I had to stop and put them back on a couple miles later.  The temperature started at 27 and ended at 20!  Quite a drop for an hour.  But still, I wasn't cold and could add more layers for much colder temperatures.  The thermometer is always more intimidating than the actual temperature.

I hope that by not pushing it as hard this week that tomorrow's run will be a bit better than last Tuesday.

From Chad on Thu, Dec 08, 2011 at 11:26:46 from 168.177.153.27

My problems always happen at miles 20/21. I don't necessarily get tired first, my legs just die, which then leads to a complete loss of energy. 9 minute miles turn into 11 minute miles. So, I need lots of miles between now and then so my legs will last 26. I also have a tendency to cut those long runs short. I'm looking forward to some of your organized long runs to keep me in it for all miles. No cutting it short.

Felt sluggish today.  I started of running 8:1?s in miles 2 and 3, planning on keeping that speed but after mile 3 I knew I wasn't going to be able keep that pace.  I kept waiting for it to get easier and it never did so I slowed down.  Mile 5 I started to not feel so good.  I needed to "take a seat" if you know what I mean.  I passed the pop at willow park choosing instead to finish the 1.5 miles until home.  Well it got worse after that and I took the shortcut home, walking at times.  Once home I confirmed my suspicions on why I was sluggish.  I unloaded a significant amount of material.

I wanted to run 13 but there just wasn't time.  I could have started earlier but I was intimidated by the temperature.  I know it would have been fine.  Bright sunny days feel warmer than the actual temperature.  As for the run, everything felt pretty good.  I didn't push the pace at all, I just set it on cruise at 8:30ish.

On my way back I was getting back on the trail from Olympic Park where it is closed.  I could see three runners a few hundred yards ahead and one of them looked like Smooth and another looked like Wendy.  I picked up the pace to catch up and see if I was right.  I got closer and asked from behind, "Hey Smooth, is that you?"  All three of them jumped out of their shoes.  Apparently they didn't hear me coming at all.  So it was Smooth, Wendy, and Karen.  I don't think I've met Karen before, but now I have.  Wendy and Karen were only running eight and were almost done.  Smooth was running 16.  It's close to 4 miles from the old bridge to my house so I got to run them with Smooth.  It was great fun and the miles flew by.  Wendy and Karen were glad as well because they were a little worried about leaving Smooth to run by herself.

Thanks ladies, for some great company.

New shoes.  I went a completely different direction.  I've mostly warn support shoes with some neutral cushion shoes mixed in.  I went with a little less this time.  I've been working on my form for that last year or so and as far as I can tell I've improved it a lot.  So with better form I thought I would try something a little less.  So I went to the shoe store and tried several different cushy minimalist shoes.  I'm not a cave man so no non-cushy shoes.  Anyway, after trying out the Altras on the treadmill the thought that came to mind is that these shoes didn't get in the way of running form.  So they're supposed to work your calves pretty good the first few times you wear them because of the zero drop.  They seemed to be doing just that until I realized that I was actually striking on the forefoot instead of midfoot.  Is it weird that I had to lengthen my stride slightly to strike on my midfoot?  Well it worked.  My legs were immediately more relaxed while continuing good posture and increasing speed.  It was noticeably easier to run.  So my first run in these shoes was AWESOME.  I beat my best 7 mile time by 14 seconds per mile.  That's almost a full 2 minutes.  Average pace 7:55.  It wasn't all the shoes.  I was feeling pretty good and only ran 10 on Saturday, but all the same, 7:55.  My legs feel good now but the last time I ran this hard I was a mess on the next day's run.  We'll see.

Recovery run from yesterday's mad dash - avg 9:06.  Went a lot better than the run two weeks ago that followed that mad dash.  It was a lot colder than yesterday.  I should have worn gloves.  The wet asphalt froze and got slick on the way back.  I had to tread lightly.

Nice job yesterday! Great to beat you best at any distance.

I really want to try the Altras, but I am a bit of a chicken.

good job, chad. i'm also very curious about the altras. glad you like them.

Will you be running tomorrow (Sat.)? We'll be down on the trail meeting at 8am. Hope to see you. :)

Oh and please no slipperies! :)

I'm planning on it. And the trail was dry today so we shouldn't have to watch for ice.

I couldn't fit in a run yesterday so I had to do it today.  I'm still on 4 runs a week, I'll add another in a few weeks.  I took it nice and easy, avg 9:25, so I'll be able to run 13-14 miles tomorrow with the gang.  My son rode his bike with me.  We got some "dad/son bonding time"  but to be truthful his mom just wanted him out of the house to burn off some steam.

Fun run.  I haven't run this far in well over a year.  Smooth dragged me along for the last for.  Thank you Smooth!  I was getting a bit tired toward the end and was ready to be done.  We actually got back to the cars with a quarter mile or so left but my watch had died almost at that very moment.  I didn't know how far to go and back to get 14 so I said good enough.  Pretty good excuse, eh?  Anyway, it felt good but I was ready to be done.  Smooth went on to get 18 and her friends Wendy and Karen along with Maynard ran the first 10.

It was cold today and with all the smog, the sun actually looked like a full moon.  It was a little creepy.  The smog doesn't bother me as it does some but it does make me cough a little at the end of a hard run.  What I don't like is that it makes it always cold.  The sun can't find its way in to warm things up.

The 34 miles this week is the also the most I've run in well over a year.  I feel really good.  The inside of my ankles are a little soar.  I'm used to some support on the inside of my shoes and the Altras and the high mileage Elixers don't provide that.  The muscles and tendons there on the inside of my feet have to work to provide the support that my shoes have in the past.  It's not a big deal but I don't want it to be.

Glad you got a good run in! Smooth is good company. Nice work pushing through the miles this week and dealing with the creepy soup we have now - blech!

No good suggestions on the ankle/shoe issue. Maybe some foot strengthening exercises? Take the shoes off and work on balance (like yoga balance poses etc) with bare feet. Should help those tendons ease slowly into the support a little better?

7 miles on the JRP in the soup.  I would like to see the sky, even a cloudy sky.  This weather sucks.  My legs are still dead from the 14 on Saturday so I took it easy, 8:25.  My ankles and achilles were tighter than my initial run in the Altras last week.  I'll probably give it another week before I step into 'em again.

I have the same problem with the Altras. I am not liking them much! I agree with wanting to see the sky and the sun! This weather sucks!!!

From Chad on Tue, Dec 20, 2011 at 10:20:35 from 168.177.153.27

Burt - You might be onto something there. Just checked the weather in several Montana towns (do they even have cities there?). I thought it would be wicked cold but it isn't very different. I guess having sky lets the sun warm things up a bit.

Steam8 - How long have you had your Altras? This is only my second run so it is what I expected. The first run was great so I'm hoping that my feet/ankles/achilles get stronger. Have you not found that to be the case?

From Steam8 on Fri, Dec 23, 2011 at 20:30:42 from 166.70.55.77

I quit wearing them. I only wear them to walk now! ha! I just don't like how I feel running in them. I just love my Asics and I think I just wasted 95 bucks! :( Where are you anyway?? You haven't posted for days!!! Hope all is well! I hope you have a Merry Christmas!!!

From The Quiet Pirate on Mon, Dec 26, 2011 at 23:35:06 from 71.51.226.105

How was the run? Are Altras minimalist shoes or just "special" shoes?

Hope your Christmas was wonderful and you had lots of hot cocoa with whipped cream :-)

From Chad on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 10:26:26 from 168.177.153.27

My feet still need to get stronger before I can run in my Altras every day. My ankles have been getting sore. It's like a shin splint only lower toward my ankle. And as for how to classify the shoe, I don't know. It has some cushion and isn't just a glove for your foot so you could say it is a light cushion shoe, but the only other zero drop shoes are minimalist gloves. I guess it's somewhere in between but what do I know. I'm certainly not a shoe expert.

As for Paige, she got gum and candy in her stocking and hasn't thought twice about hot chocolate or whipped cream. She has been pushing around her "son" - "Max the dirty kid" in her new stroller. He "eats" with us as well in the new high chair Paige got for him. And he sleeps in the new play pen right next to her bed.

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 12:03:03 from 71.51.226.105

I googled altras. They look like they'd make it easier to get a midfoot strike without a chunky heel getting in the way.

I really like my Merrill minimalist shoes. No toes, very thin sole, and comfy. I am still Only running in them very short distances, but wear them all day around the house/errands. I can feel my feet getting stronger- so I think they're good in that aspect. Not sure if I would ever run a long race in them.

Paige sounds like a great mommy taking care of scuzzy Max. I think she should have a hot cocoa tea party with you and Max:-)

From RAD on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 12:06:20 from 98.202.23.178

Sounds like QP better not be invited to the tea party, scuzzy Max might find a way to meet up with baby yum yum!!! :)

From Chad on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 12:16:03 from 168.177.153.27

I have only worn the Altras for runs. Maybe I should wear them around throughout the day as well.

I like the idea of a hot cocoa party with Max. Paige would go absolutely love it. She had a tea party for her birthday and it was all her idea. She did name her doll "Max the dirty kid." She has tried to drop "the dirty kid" from his name but we won't let her. It's too cute. She gets mad every time we use it.

I don't get the baby yum yum reference. Is there an inside joke there?

From RAD on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 12:23:21 from 98.202.23.178

well, sort of. When I was a good little 4 year old mommy to a 'Max the dirty kid' named baby yum yum, she got so scuzzy that QP plotted and carried out a plan to send baby yum yum to the aviary (dump). Poor little baby yum yum disappeared one night and this good little mommy never saw her again!! See what a terror that pirate is?!?

From Chad on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 12:29:27 from 168.177.153.27

What a horrible auntie, making that poor innocent baby walk the plank! As for Max, he gets a ride in the washing machine every once in a while, including when Paige was sick a few weeks ago and got a bit of puke on him. Max the dirt/stinky kid came out laundry scent fresh.

From The Quiet Pirate on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 20:21:36 from 71.51.226.105

Baby yum yum was not just a scuzzy doll, her blonde hair was a nappy mess of plastic tangles all matted together and she was threatening a mutiny where she and all of RAD's monchici dolls would rise up and take over the world.

You don't need to send me any thank-you cards or gifts, your life and freedom are thanks enough.

I'm sure Max the dirty kid is just a lost, misunderstood little boy who loves his Paige and humanity in general.

I'd give the Altras some "house" time and let your feet & legs get used to them.

Crappy week for miles.  I got ten in on this one with my sister-in-law from Indiana along with Smooth, Karen, Maynard, Beca, and David.  Did I miss anyone?  It started off real cold on the thermometer but it didn't feel that cold and by the end it was beautiful.

I haven't had time to run.  After family time and work there has been nothing left.  This next week doesn't look any better.  I don't know where to find the time either.  I can't drop either of the other two this next week so I suppose it will be another sparse week.  Maybe I'll shoot for 25 for the week starting on Wednesday.

Be careful on those long runs....you don't want to get injured by putting all of your miles in together. I know it is hard when you are a busy dad to get those runs in! I hope you can find some time for yourself and get your runs in the is week!

From Chad on Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 12:42:04 from 168.177.153.27

Thanks Steam8. I missed a run again yesterday because I was just wiped out. I'm burning the candle at both ends. I was considering adding some extra miles on Saturday to make up for those I've missed over the last two weeks. But I think you're right. An injury will set me back more than a week with a few missed runs.

From Steam8 on Thu, Dec 29, 2011 at 12:46:36 from 166.70.55.77

Give yourself a break! I always feel crazy if I get too busy to get my miles in.....but, giving yourself a week or two off will be good for your body to heal up and you will still be in great shape when you have time to start back up again!

Another run in the new shoes.  I felt great, wonderful in fact, for the first three miles then my ankles started to hurt again.  It's not bad, I can run through it, but I don't want to get injured so I stopped every half mile or so after that to stretch.  It seemed to work well and I'm hoping that my recovery will be faster.  I was hoping that there would be less transition into these shoes but I'll keep plugging away at them.  My feet will get there.  I love them for the first half of the runs I've had in them so I'm not going to give up.

One of the things this shoe is supposed to do is strengthen you feet. The jury is still out but I'm hoping that it does that and helps reduce nagging injuries. I'll keep you posted.

I set the alarm for 6 but didn't have the motivation to get out in the dark.  I went back to sleep and went at 8 instead.  The trail was empty.  Weird because it was beautiful.  There was a bit of a north wind but not enough to make it uncomfortable.  I can tell I haven't been getting in all the miles I've wanted over the last few weeks because I was a little sluggish.  My ankles felt good however.

The beavers finished their job or at least last nights wind storm finished it for them.  There was a big tree that had been gnawed through on the trail and the wind took it down.  It is blocking the trail and it takes a bit of climbing to get over it.  On the way back I went around.  It is between two access points so I exited the trail just north of the blockage and got back on just to the south.
